The competition winning approach to the design of the Byre Theatre integrates a contemporary auditorium and full flytower sensitively into the constrained and well-loved historic fabric of St Andrews. Public spaces form an internal route that link a main street frontage to a garden courtyard and pedestrian lane behind. Traditional materials and forms draw on the Byre’s agricultural history and are playfully re-interpreted to form a series of contextual edges to the building. These gradually open up to reveal an inner concrete core housing the curved auditorium at the heart of the project.
