The Scottish Parliament, Edinburgh

Nicoll Russell Studios prepared proposals for a new visitor security facility at the Scottish Parliament, as part of a competitive selection process. The proposals were developed to accommodate the client's brief while also respecting the architectural syntax of the Enric Miralles' designed host building, adopting a sympathetic palette of organic forms, materials and detailing. The extension addresses the public space in front of the Parliament, and leads the visitor into the building via a large framed view of Arthur's Seat thereby continuing Miralles' romantic connection between the natural and urban worlds. Formed as an independent extension, the simple form of the visitor facility was developed to minimise disruption internally and to mitigate any resultant costs related to alteration works to the original building.
