Occasionally projects have a far greater impact than their value would necessarily suggest. This is such a project.
As the name suggests it has at its heart two semi detached houses, which have now been combined to form a youth club, Internet café, outreach centre and community garden. Our practice worked with the members of the club and the youth workers to initially create the Internet café as part of Dundee's Business Support Group.
Since then the centre has further developed through our assistance, most substantially with the creation of the Community Garden around the building. We were instrumental in the design of the project, accumulating funding, obtaining pledges of work in kind and ultimately the application to the producers and its development as a "Beechgrove Community Garden".
This is far from a normal architectural commission and our key role in its success has seen our office receive a Dynamic Place Award 2004, a Scottish Enterprise Tayside Business Award, and the IBM Volunteering Scotland Award. The completion of the project has subsequently been screened as part of the BBC's Beechgrove Garden.
