South Africa
Nicoll Russell Studios were commissioned to design a private house situated on the Garden Route coast of South Africa. Bedrooms and ancillary spaces surround a multi level living area through which internal landscaping terraces down the slope of the site from the entrance at the North to the pool deck to the South. All rooms enjoy the fabulous sea views.
Generally the accommodation is of a flat roofed form with the exception of the central space which is sheltered by an elegant light weight floating roof separated from the remaining building by a glazed clearstorey. The roof form and shape is reminiscent of a traditional African shield. It was essential to the success of the house design that the expression and detail of this roof was controlled and engineered to retain its elegance and lightness of form, reflecting as far as possible the simplicity of the construction of the skin clad shields which inspired the idea.
