Dundee Repertory Theatre Extension
The creation of the Scottish Dance Theatre at Dundee Rep capped off a twenty year relationship with the one client. Over that period our practice has refurbished the theatre on a number of occasions and has significantly extended the original building across four phases. The dance studio, changing rooms and support accommodation for the Scottish Dance Theatre constructed over the Repís workshops was the biggest of those phases.
It successfully continues the many themes and details of the original building and is carefully spliced into the Repís cubic townscape. The studio is flooded with light, affords views across the city and points towards the sky by virtue of its pyramidal roof and ceiling.
Therefore architecturally it shows reverence to our first building, with virtually a conservation mindset. With the importance it plays in the hearts of many Dundondians and ours as its creators, this approach seems justified, particularly given the increasing murmurings that the Rep might be listed in the near future.
The Rep will always enjoy a special place in our minds, but this architectural continuity also underlines our ongoing relationship with a special client. All architects take great pride in such relationships, we are no different and hope that the Scottish Dance Theatre will turn out to be only one highlight of a continuing involvement at the Rep for many years to come.
