Private house

Edinburgh

The existing house was on first impressions an ‘ordinary’ 2 storey rendered detached house on a quiet residential street in Edinburgh. Its best feature, its lovely back garden, sloped quickly downwards, away from the house.

In developing the clients brief for new kitchen, dining and family room it became obvious that a better connection with the garden was needed to improve their quality of living and their ability to use the garden more fully.

The resulting design achieves this with a series of floor plates ‘terracing’ down into the garden each linked with short flights of steps. The connection is further enhanced by large areas of glazing, sliding doors and by continuing the floor finishes from inside to outside. The finishes are restrained, simple timber, slate, and white walls.
