The brief was to extend an existing semidetached single storey cottage with a contemporary lounge extension.
The cottage sits in a mature, south facing garden. An area on the west boundary was identified as the most suitable position for the extension. This location created a small court yard between the extension and the adjacent two storey Georgian villa as well as ensuring the maximum amount of privacy for all the living areas.
The south elevation and east elevation are fully glazed and the east wall contains a 2.4 metre square moveable wall which when open links to the courtyard area, doubling the size of the living area. On the east boundary of the courtyard is a Lavender tree which subtly shades the exterior living space and provides a focal point for the adjacent lounge.
The large area of glass ensures the relationship of the interior with the landscape is uninterrupted while from the exterior the scale of the extension is disguised by the reflective characteristics of the glass.
