Blackpool + Wrexham

Nicoll Russell Studios worked alongside Styles & Wood, one of UK’s largest fit-out contractors, to provide extensive design and co-ordination services for two new Debenhams department stores in Blackpool and Wrexham. Debenhams is fondly known as ‘styling the nation’ and as a leading retailer, actively develops their brand to maintain its high street retail status. Our role was to recognise the fluid nature of retail, sustain the strong brand identity, understand the retail planning principles and interpret our design thoughts through a fresh and inspiring environment.
 
Both projects are new build department stores located within the city centre. Debenhams Blackpool is the anchor tenant of the newly extended Houndshill Shopping Centre, and boasts 70,000 sq ft of retail space over 3 floors. Debenhams Wrexham is the anchor tenant of the new mixed use Eagles Meadow Shopping Centre, and extends over 2 floors with over 65,000 sq ft of trading space.
 
We focused on creating dramatic shop entrances, which were both strongly branded and maximised views into the store. The interior fit out was designed to create a neutral backdrop in which the merchandise is focal and the graphical accessories tell a story. In both stores, a central escalator atrium is formed to encourage natural circulation and provide an illuminated feature, which allows views to floors above and below.
