Canal Bridge

Egypt

This 360m long single span network arch crossing of the Suez Canal was designed for our client Cleveland Bridge. The structure's long approach roads climb high above the surrounding flat desert to maintain the required clearances above what is one of the world's most important shipping waterways.

To avoid the awkward unresolved appearance and detailing normally associated with this form of bridge, the main pier junctions have been designed to provide a flowing visual continuity between the arch and approach decks. The treatment of the 'masonary' piers responds to the colours of the desert and historic Egyptian architecture.
